FAQs for Static IPs

  What is an IP address?
Computers use IP addresses to locate and talk to each other on the Internet, much the same way people use phone numbers to call someone, street addresses for sending mail, and e-mail addresses to send electronic messages to a specific person. There are two kinds of IP addresses: static and dynamic.
Why would I need a static IP address?
You may want to consider a static IP address if you:
  • Host your Web site on a computer at your home or office.
  • Remotely access your computers over the Internet (e.g., telnet or FTP).
  • Are required to have a static IP address for access to a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
Do I need a static IP address to have my own web site?
Not necessarily. Qwest.net® and Qwestoffice.net customers can have a web page stored on Qwest.net servers. Your private domain name can be mapped to the CenturyLink™ stored web page. However, if you store and run your web site using your computer as a server, you will need static IP addresses.
What should I consider before leasing a single static IP address?
Advantages:
A single static IP address uses Network Address Translation (NAT), and is available for customers with CenturyLink High-Speed Internet® and IDSL service. It is used for:
  • Operating a Web server
  • Operating a game server
  • Running a corporate Local Area Network (LAN)

Disadvantages:
Single static IPs do not provide the ability to assign a gateway address or assign a public IP address to devices on your internal network.

  • If you lease a single static IP address, it ONLY provides the ability to keep the same public IP assigned to the WAN side of your high-speed Internet modem.
  • If you need to assign a public IP address to devices behind your high-speed Internet modem, you will need to purchase a block of IP addresses.
Why would I need multiple static IP addresses (referred to as a "block")?
If you need the ability to assign a gateway address or assign a public IP address to devices on the internal network, you will need a block of static IP addresses.
  • If a single static IP address is being leased, it only provides the ability to keep the same public IP address assigned to the WAN side of the modem and nothing more.
  • If public IP addresses need to be assigned to devices behind the high-speed Internet modem, you need to lease a block of IP addresses.
  What is ARIN?
ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers) is a nonprofit corporation that manages the distribution of IP addresses for most of North America. (For additional information see www.arin.net)
Why do I have to register my Static IPs?
Static IP addresses require registration for several reasons. Two of the most important reasons are:
  • Avoid duplicate distribution
  • Ensure that traffic intended for a static IP reaches the correct destination
How many static IP addresses can I lease per high-speed Internet telephone line?
You can lease a single static IP address from CenturyLink or a block of several contiguous IP addresses. Each high-speed Internet telephone line can only have one block leased to it, however there are several choices of block sizes available.

Static IPs
Number of IP's Number of Assignable* IP's Monthly Rate One Time Charge
1 0** $5.95 $25.00
8 5 $14.95 $50.00
16 13 $29.95 $75.00
32 29 $59.95 $150.00
64 61 $119.95 $250.00

*Assignable refers to dedicating an IP address to a device(s) behind your DSL modem or authenticating device.

**If you lease 1 public (WAN) static IP address, it ONLY provides 1 IP used by your DSL modem or authenticating device. If you need to assign an IP address to a devices behind your DSL modem or authenticating device, you will need to lease a block of 8 or more IP's.

You may lease up to 64 Static IP addresses per high-speed Internet telephone line.
When you lease a block of IP addresses, three addresses are reserved for network functions. The remaining IP addresses are available for you to assign to individual computers as outlined in the table below:

What happens to my IP addresses if I upgrade or downgrade block size?
If you want to increase or decrease your static IP block size, you will be assigned new IP addresses (you can't keep any existing IP addresses). You will then need to make the necessary configuration changes in your equipment to accommodate the new IP address assignments.
What is the difference between how many static IP addresses I lease and how many can be assigned?
When you lease a block of IP addresses, three addresses are reserved for network functions. The others are user-assignable to individual computers or servers.
Are static IP addresses available for lease to all CenturyLink customers?
Static IP addresses are currently available for lease to CenturyLink High-Speed Internet*, Qwest.net and Qwestoffice.net customers, located in AZ, CO, ID, IA, MN, MT, NE, NM, ND, OR, SD, UT, WA, WY, and using the following CenturyLink services:
  • IDSL
  • CenturyLink High-Speed Internet (Broadband, DSL)
  • ISDN (only static IP blocks can be leased with ISDN, no single IP leases)

* Must have a CenturyLink provided ISP

Will outgoing mail relay servers be available to me if I lease a static IP block?
Depends on your area, leasing a static IP block from CenturyLink will give you access to outgoing mail relay servers. Outgoing mail relay will only work when you connect to the Internet through the Internet service associated with the static IP block lease.
  • To find the outgoing mail server for your area, locate your POP & SMTP mail server on the Configuration Settings list. Then, enter the appropriate outgoing mail server in your email client.

  What is "DNS"?
DNS (Domain Name System) is a directory that translates names to numbers. It is like a phone book for the Internet. DNS translates a domain name (e.g. www.centurylink.com) to the internet IP address at which the web site with that domain name is hosted (e.g. 155.70.40.251). Without DNS, you would need to know the IP address to get to a specific web site. However, DNS 'looks up' the address typed in to the address bar and translates it to the IP address for you, so the appropriate web page can be found and displayed.
  What is "reverse DNS"?
Reverse DNS (rDNS) is the opposite directory from DNS. It translates numbers to names. rDNS translates an IP address to a domain name. The original use of the rDNS was mainly for network troubleshooting. More recently rDNS has been used as an anti-spam technique.

Some email servers may view email as spam if it originates from an IP address that does not have rDNS configured. In more extreme situations, the receiving email server will compare the originating IP address, the domain name that is listed as the sender, and then check for a rDNS record pointing back to the sender's domain name.

Can I lease static IP addresses if I have dial-up Internet service?
No. You must have CenturyLink High-Speed Internet service to lease static IP addresses.
If I change my ISP, what happens to my static IP(s)?
Switching your service between one CenturyLink provided ISP and another should not require you to get new static IPs. When you call to make the change, inform the CenturyLink representative that you had static IP addresses on your current account and you would like to keep the same static IPs with the new CenturyLink ISP service. However, if you switch from a CenturyLink provided ISP to a 3rd party ISP, you will lose any static IPs that were leased from CenturyLink.
If I move my service, what happens to my static IP(s)?

You might be able to keep the same static IP addresses. When you call CenturyLink to move your service from one location to another, inform the CenturyLink representative that you have static IP addresses and would like to have them at the new location. There are two factors in your service location change that could prevent this:

  • The distance between your old and new locations may necessitate new static IP addresses with your service in the new location
  • If your high-speed Internet service type changes (e.g. changing your ISP to a provider other than a CenturyLink ISP), it may not be possible to have static IP addresses, or new static IP addresses may be required.

If, during ordering or updating your static IP(s) you are instructed that your addresses need to be changed, follow the specified steps for your modem after your service has been activated at the new location.

Please print these instructions and take them with you to your new location.
